Corporate Social Responsibility

Sister Kathy - Nairobi

Mukuru Promotion Centre (MPC) is a church based charitable organization that was established by the Sisters of Mercy in 1985.

Mukuru Promotion Centre (MPC) is a church based charitable organization that was established by the Sisters of Mercy in 1985. The organization started as a temporary school in the heart of the Mukuru slums and its key objective then was to provide education to the children of Mukuru to get them off the streets.

Since its inception, MPC has expanded a great deal and now operates several projects that focus on four key areas: Education, Health, Vocational Training, and Social Rehabilitation. In education for example, the Centre serves 5,325 primary pupils, 339 secondary pupils and 76 youths within Mukuru enrolled in our Mercy Vocational Training.

e-CFS donated a cheque and 4 laptop computers to the Mukuru Promotion Centre to assist in the education of students in IT and communications in the Mukuru slums.

Sisters of Mercy - Nairobi

Mukuru Promotion Centre is a registered charitable Trust (registered under The Land (Perpetual Succession) Ordinance Chapter 163 as No. P.S. 173/1) and a sponsored work of the Sisters of Mercy, Kenya.

Mukuru have four primary schools, one secondary school, a health clinic, rehabilitation centre for street boys, community home base care; and a vocational training centre for Mukuru slums.

At the Head Office site there are educational institutions:

  •  St Bakhita Primary,
  •  St Michael’s Secondary and
  •  Our Lady of Mercy Vocational Training Centre.

There is a multipurpose hall without any multimedia equipment for educational and training purposes. The use of multimedia learning can provide more outcomes to more students as opposed to text books. Most of our students cannot afford to pay school fees. The purchase of text books is an added cost for parents and guardians that they simply cannot afford. Another issue that we have in the Mukuru slums is the constant outbreak of fires. The simple mbatai (iron sheeting) housing cannot protect against fires and when they occur everything is lost, including any text books.

e-CFS donated funds, 1 Windows PC and a projector to establish an multi-media classroom.

KENYA - VILLAGE SCHOOLS

The project to improve 3 primary schools in Ngomeni village on the Kenya coast has been going on for about 14 years.

It is a very poor area where families essentially survive largely at a subsistence level, many children walk considerable distances to school where facilities have been basic. The school we are currently supporting provides primary education for around 200 children from age 3 until 14. Many children do not complete their primary education by age 11 as they take time out to help their families consequently there are several older children still completing their education.

We have built 2 classrooms, staffrooms and the school now has water and power. Encouragingly it is leading the local league tables which is a great achievement for the staff.

e-CFS became involved in these projects in 2017 and has made a number of donations to support the completion of this work.
